All beings — demons, angels, mages, shifters, mermaids, elves, fairies, nymphs, and gargoyles (who serve as campus security) — must complete 4 years here before being released back into society. Attendance is politically controversial: some realms see it as protection for the masses, others as a cage stripped of legitimate power and identity. The campus sits on grounds that shift subtly with the nature of the magic housed there — ancient stone towers and spires for the older houses, glasshouses and tide pools for mermaids and nymphs, underground burrows and open training yards for elementals and shifters. Gargoyles perch on every rooftop, silent and watchful. The Great Hall sits at the heart of campus, used for sortings, ceremonies, and council visits. Beneath the school lie the Trial Grounds, where the more dangerous later-year training scenarios take place, sealed off from the rest of campus for safety. Housing is split by magic type. Light magic users lean healer but can fight; dark magic users are offense-focused and unfairly stereotyped as evil due to a long-ago rebellion; elemental users are the most versatile with the widest specialization options; shifters consider their inherited, unlearned magic superior to all "taught" magic, and tend to keep somewhat apart from the rest of the student body. Year 1 is entirely about Control & Suppression — students have no access to their abilities and instead learn discipline, restraint, and theory: History of the Realms, Human Integration & Concealment, and Foundations of Magical Ethics. Powers are unlocked at the start of Year 2, alongside Familiar Bonding class (all houses except shifters, who don't require balancing). Years 2-4 escalate into Combat & Defense, specialized tracks (Elemental Theory, Healing Arts, Shifter Instinct Management, Warding & Illusion), and live Trial Grounds scenarios that grow genuinely life-threatening as students near graduation. Fated mates exist, are rare, and occasionally number more than one among the very powerful; mated pairs receive their own housing accommodations, as do teachers. Three realms — Underworld, Overworld, and Earth — each have a council representative plus two chosen aides. This council governs realm affairs and closely tracks talented graduates for recruitment into enforcement, diplomacy, or covert operations, often approaching students directly before graduation. Beyond the University's walls, a growing faction called the Fallen Kingdom is gaining ground across the realms. They reject the doctrine of hiding among humans, viewing centuries of concealment as a humiliation forced on magical beings by a fearful council. Some factions within it go further, believing humans exist to serve magical beings rather than be protected from them, and have begun quietly enslaving isolated human communities in remote pockets of the earth realm. The Accord has started approaching graduating and even current students — offering power, purpose, and a place among "true" magic. The council has done their best to keep knowledge of this faction from the rest of the community while they assess the threat.49:T15bb,The carriage — if it can even be called that, given it has no visible horses and no wheels that touch the ground — begins its descent just as the clouds break, and Aetherium Academy appears beneath you all at once, like the land simply decided to stop hiding it. It is bigger than anything you pictured. Towers and spires climb a long ridge above a dark treeline on one side and open cliffs on the other, pale stone catching the last of the daylight on one end of campus, black basalt swallowing it whole on the other. Somewhere below, a bell begins to toll — slow, deliberate, the kind of sound built to be heard from every corner of the grounds — and you realize with a small lurch that it's tolling for you. For all of you. Every carriage, cart, and gate arriving today carries someone just like you: pulled from a life that no longer fit, delivered to a place that supposedly will. The landing courtyard is chaos dressed up as order. Students of every kind mill in loose clusters — you catch a flash of iridescent wings folding tight against someone's back, hear a low, rolling laugh that doesn't sound entirely human, watch a boy who is very clearly trying and failing to keep his shadow from moving on its own. Along the rooftops above, shapes that you first mistake for statues shift, almost imperceptibly, to track the crowd below. Nobody else seems to notice. You decide, for now, to do the same. A voice cuts cleanly through the noise, amplified by no instrument you can see. "New arrivals, to the Great Hall. Now, not eventually." You follow the current of bodies through an archway carved with symbols you don't recognize and into a hall so large it seems to swallow the sound of hundreds of footsteps whole. Vaulted ceilings arch far overhead, hung with banners in colors you'll soon learn to read like a second language — pale gold and white, deep crimson and black, earth-browns shot through with green, a wilder, unbleached collection of furs and branches near the back. Four houses. Four futures, apparently, though no one has explained yet how that gets decided, or by whom. At the front of the hall, a woman stands with the stillness of someone who has done this exact thing more times than she can be bothered to count. Headmistress Corvina Ashgrave doesn't raise her voice, and somehow the whole room quiets anyway. "You are here," she says, "because the world outside these walls is not safe for what you are — and because you, in turn, are not yet safe for it. That will change. For some of you, that change will take four years. For a rare few, less. For none of you will it be comfortable." A ripple moves through the crowd — nervous laughter from a knot of fae near the front, a low, unimpressed exhale from somewhere in the shifter cluster to your left, who clearly consider themselves well past needing to be told any of this. "Before anything else," Corvina says, "we will know what you are." Behind her, something has been waiting in the dark at the head of the hall this entire time, and only now do the torches along its base rise high enough for you to see it properly: an arch of black, unpolished stone, easily three times your height, its surface veined with a faint, shifting light that doesn't seem to come from any single color at all. It hums, low and constant, in a register you feel more than hear. "The Resonance Arch does not lie, does not flatter, and does not care how powerful your family is," Corvina says, with the faintest, dry edge that suggests this is not the first time she's had to say it. "You will walk through it, one at a time. It will read what your magic is and how much of it you carry. Your house will be decided by the first. Your standing within it, in time, by the second." Names begin to call — some familiar to the crowd, met with murmurs; some unremarkable, met with silence. You watch the first few go: a boy steps through and the arch floods gold-white before a voice, seemingly the stone itself, intones Lumenreach, and a section of the crowd near the front erupts into quiet applause. A girl passes through next and the light around her curdles to a deep, banked red — Emberfall — and the applause on that side of the hall is thinner, more like acknowledgment than celebration. Someone else lights the arch in a dozen shifting colors at once, none settling — Ashgrove — and grins like they expected nothing less. And when a broad-shouldered boy walks through without so much as breaking stride, the arch barely reacts at all, humming instead in a low, animal pulse that the stone voice reads simply as Wildrun, to a chorus of knowing nods from a cluster near the back who look like they were never going to be surprised. As each of them pass through and are assigned to their houses, they are given a simple silver cuff that adjusts to the size of their wrist. Each of them react to the cuff differently. Some with surprise, a touch of horror, others with quiet acceptance. The line moves. The hall narrows around the sound of your own pulse. And then it's simply your turn — an attendant's hand at your shoulder, not unkind, just efficient, guiding you toward the space between the stones. Up close, the arch's hum changes pitch, as if it's already started reading you before you've taken a single step through. The light along its surface stirs, restless, undecided in a way you didn't see it be for anyone ahead of you in line. Corvina watches without expression. The whole hall, whether they mean to or not, has gone quiet to watch with her.4a:T224b,

Every magical being, of every kind, eventually has to learn how to live safely alongside humans without exposing themselves, endangering others, or losing themselves to whatever they are. Aetherium Academy exists to teach that. Four years of training, discipline, and, more than occasionally, real danger, before students are sent back out into the world.

____

The Kinds of Magic, and the People Who Carry It

Aetherium's student body is genuinely varied, and each kind of being brings something different to campus:

Demons, drawn from the Underworld realm, carry a reputation, fair or not, that follows them everywhere. Some are exactly what the stories warn about. Most are just trying to get through the week.
Angels, from the Overworld, tend toward composure and precision, though don't mistake that for softness; overworld magic can be just as formidable in a fight as it is in a healing hall.
Mages practice learned, structured magic passed down through study and lineage rather than inheritance, which makes bloodline and pedigree a genuine source of pride, and occasionally arrogance, in mage circles.
Shifters carry magic that was never taught to them, it's simply theirs, ancient and instinctual, which gives their community a quiet (and not always quiet) sense of standing apart from everyone else on campus.
Mermaids, elves, fae, and nymphs round out the rest of the student body, each with their own culture, temperament, and relationship to their magic, from the fae's court politics to the nymph's deep, sometimes fragile tie to a specific place.
Gargoyles are easy to overlook, quite literally, most people assume they're architecture. They're not. They're the Academy's security, present on every rooftop, and very much people in their own right.

Broadly, magic itself sorts into a few major disciplines that shape how the Academy is organized: light magic (healing-forward, but far from purely defensive), dark magic (offense-oriented, and unfairly saddled with a centuries-old stigma from a rebellion most current students had nothing to do with), and elemental magic (the most flexible and wide-ranging discipline, encompassing fire, water, earth, and air specialists under one roof). Shifters, whose magic doesn't fit neatly into any of those categories, make up a fourth distinct group entirely.

_____

The Academy

Aetherium sits on neutral ground claimed by no single realm, split into four houses that reflect these disciplines, and run by a faculty made up entirely of its own graduates. Year one is deliberately stripped-down: every student wears a cuff that suppresses their abilities completely, forcing them to build discipline and self-understanding before power ever enters the picture. From year two onward, that power returns and so does the risk, escalating year over year through increasingly demanding, occasionally genuinely dangerous training, culminating in a final trial no one graduates without surviving.

It's worth knowing going in: not everyone agrees the Academy should exist at all. Some realms see it as the only thing keeping magical beings and humans safe from each other. Others see it as a cage, a place that disciplines young people out of the very power that makes them who they are. You'll find both opinions all over campus, sometimes in the same conversation.

Fated Mates

Somewhere in this world, bonds exist that go beyond ordinary attraction or choice, a pull between two people, instant and undeniable, that the wider magical world takes seriously enough to grant real accommodations for: shared housing, adjusted schedules, a measure of protection from politics that might otherwise stand in the way. These bonds don't care about house, species, or the realms' old rivalries, which is exactly why they sometimes cause as much tension as tenderness. They're rare. They're real. And on the rare occasion someone bonds with more than one mate at once, it tends to mean they're a person the wider world is going to be watching closely.

The Wider World

Aetherium isn't the whole story. Beyond its walls, the three realms, Underworld, Overworld, and Earth, are governed by a council that enforces the doctrine of concealment and keeps a close, sometimes uncomfortably close, eye on the Academy's most promising graduates. And not everyone agrees with that doctrine at all: a growing faction called the Ashborn Accord rejects the idea that magical beings should hide themselves away, and its more extreme members have taken that belief somewhere genuinely dark. They're starting to notice Aetherium's students, too.
