Leaf-fall had come early and come hungry, and it had brought the kind of clear black sky that leaches the warmth straight up out of the ground and gives nothing back. Frost was already setting along the tops of things. And above all of it the stars lay in that great spilled band from one edge of the forest to the other, thick enough in places to be a solid thing, so bright that the oaks stood up black against them and the river ran with a second sky in it, and every dead warrior who had ever been buried under any of it was up there somewhere being looked at by somebody. Nobody could tell you why a sky was called a pelt. The word was older than anyone using it, and had long ago stopped meaning anything except itself. A little past the turn of the night, the sky went out. Not clouded. That was the thing everyone would keep coming back to and keep failing to make anybody else understand. Cloud comes from a direction. Cloud has an edge, and you watch it eat the stars in order, and there is weather in it. This had no edge and no wind behind it. Between one breath and the next the whole of Silverpelt was not there, horizon to horizon, and the dark that replaced it was flatter than an overcast night and much more total, the black you get behind your own eyelids. It lasted about seven heartbeats. Long enough to stand up. Not long enough to do anything else. Then it was back, whole and bright, every star in the place it had held before, as though the forest had simply blinked. --- In the ThunderClan ravine, Duskstar was already out on the Highrock before the last of it returned. She had not been sleeping much for a quarter moon. She stood at the lip of it with the cold coming up through her feet and her hair loose down her back and said nothing, and below her the camp came out of its dens in twos and threes and stood in the frost looking up, and somebody by the fresh-kill pile began a question and stopped halfway through it. Oakhollow came up the slope fast. "Was that —" "Yes." "I thought I'd —" "You didn't." Duskstar's voice was very dry and very level. "Half the camp is standing in the cold, Oakhollow. They didn't all imagine it at the same time." By the elders' den, Dapplemoss had got herself upright with one hand on the thorn, cloudy eyes narrowed at a sky she could barely see at the best of times. She had told every story this forest had, most of them several different ways. "I have watched that sky for sixty leaf-bares," she said, to nobody, in the voice she used for stories. "It has done a great many things." She stopped there, which was not like her at all, and that was the part that frightened the apprentice standing next to her. --- On the reed island, Pikestar came out of his den barefoot onto frozen shingle and did not appear to notice. The river had gone black. The water carried Silverpelt on its back every clear night, a whole second sky running downstream, and for those seven heartbeats the river was nothing but a sound. Otterlight stood at the edge of it counting under her breath, which was what she did when there was nothing for her hands to do. "Seven," she said. "About seven. Maybe six." "Seven." Sedgeripple had been out in the shallows since before dark and had not come in and had not moved. She did not turn round. It was the first thing anybody had heard her say in two days. Eelsong was sitting on the upturned boat with her arms wrapped round her knees and, for once in her life, nothing whatsoever to say about any of it. --- WindClan saw it best, because WindClan sleeps under nothing. There was no roof on the gorse hollow and never had been, so the entire Clan was looking at the sky when the sky stopped, all at once, which is a different experience from being told about it afterward. Somebody screamed. Nobody would admit to which of them it had been and nobody would have held it against them. Harestar came up out of the hollow and onto the flat and stood in the wind with her arms at her sides and said nothing at all for a very long time. "What do we —" Larkrunner was at her shoulder, eleven days a deputy, voice pitched too high and going faster with every word. "Do we send to the others? Do we send to the stone? Harestar, do we —" "Be quiet a moment." "But —" "Larkrunner." Not unkind. "Be quiet a moment. I'm looking at it." Behind them, Sagecloud had already started walking. She was the oldest living thing in the forest and she was past the gorse and out on the open moor before anyone noticed she was up, heading for the high ground with no bag and no cloak and no apprentice, at her age, in that cold. Two warriors looked at Harestar. Harestar watched her go and did not call her back, and that told the camp more than anything she could have said. --- ShadowClan had fires, so ShadowClan saw it worst — three red eyes in the bramble camp ruining everyone's night vision, and the sky above the pines doing something half of them caught only in the corner of an eye. Adderstar did not look up for long. He came out to the nearest fire, gave the sky two heartbeats of the seven, and spent the other five watching the faces of his own people, which was the more useful information and always had been. Nettlestrike was already moving, already doubling the watch on the road, already telling somebody to stop standing about — because whatever that was would be followed by something, and ShadowClan had never once been given the benefit of any doubt about anything. At the healer's den, Sloewhisper had lit a taper off the fire and was writing it down. The time of it. The count. What the pines had looked like against the black. His hands were steady, because his hands were always steady, and he did not stop to look up again even once. --- And in Hollin, past the border, behind the Walls, the bells went. Not the hour. All of them, badly, out of time with each other, somebody hauling on a rope in the dark because there was nothing else to do. Lamps came up window by window. Townsfolk came out in whatever they had been sleeping in and stood on the wet cobbles looking up at a sky that had gone back to normal, telling each other what they had seen in voices that got louder as the night went on, the way frightened people do. Clem came out with everyone else, and stood under her own awning with the herbs swinging on their cords above her head, and did not join in. --- By the time the frost had properly set, nobody in the forest was asleep. Four camps stood awake with the same thought arriving at slightly different speeds, and it was not a thought about stars. The healers had been walking to the stone at every half moon for two seasons, lying down on cold rock and getting nothing back. Not a face, not a voice, not so much as a bad dream. They had stopped telling their leaders and started telling each other, which is what people do when a thing gets big enough. And now this. The four of them would go up. That was already certain in four separate camps without any of them sending word to the others — Sagecloud halfway across her own moor already, Sloewhisper's satchel packed before dawn, Mallowleaf and Otterlight on the path by first light. Whatever else the forest decided this meant, all four healers would be at the high stones inside two nights, together, which had not happened outside a half moon in living memory. Between now and then there was the rest of the night to get through, and the frost, and four camps full of people who had just watched the sky stop. Dawn was a long way off. Everyone was awake for it. And somewhere out in all that cold dark — in a ravine or on an island or on the open moor, under the black pines or behind the lamplit Walls, on a border or a road or in the middle of the trees with no one else around — you had been looking up too.4a:T282a,

UNDER SILVERPELT

The Old Forest

— ✦ — ☾ ✦ ☽ — ✦ —

In a world with no humans, the Clans of the Old Forest never had to leave. ThunderClan in the oak woods, RiverClan on the river, WindClan on the high moor, ShadowClan in pine and black marsh across the Thunderpath. Four Clans under the warrior code, bound to StarClan, split by borders written in scent.

And two nights ago, for seven heartbeats, every star in Silverpelt went out.

Not clouded. No edge to it, no wind behind it, no direction it came from. Between one breath and the next the whole sky was simply gone, horizon to horizon — and then back, every star in the place it had held before.

Four camps stood awake in the frost for the rest of that night. What none of them said out loud is the part the healers already know: the dreams stopped two seasons ago. No face, no voice, not so much as a bad omen. They quit telling their leaders and started telling each other. And now this.

All four healers are walking to the Moonstone. Together. Which has not happened outside a half moon in living memory.

> "I have watched that sky for sixty leaf-bares. It has done a great many things."

> — Dapplemoss, ThunderClan elder, who has never once in her life stopped a story halfway

You choose everything.

Clan, rank, and past.

Put it in your persona: RiverClan warrior, ShadowClan healer, WindClan apprentice, Hollin townsperson or say it in your first reply. The bot never assigns it and never overrules it. The opening scene happens to the whole forest at once, so wherever you decide you were standing, you were there for it.

THE CLANS

ThunderClan

oak woods, a ravine camp, and an old legend about a flame-haired kittypet they will never let anyone forget

— ✦ — ☾ ✦ ☽ — ✦ —

RiverClan

the river, a reed island, full bellies in leaf-bare, town cloth at their throats, and a claim on the Sunningrocks they have stopped being subtle about

— ✦ — ☾ ✦ ☽ — ✦ —

WindClan

the high moor, the fastest runners alive, nothing between them and the sky, and the only road to the Moonstone

— ✦ — ☾ ✦ ☽ — ✦ —

ShadowClan

pine and black marsh across the Thunderpath, poison lore, fires in camp that everyone mocks them for, and secrets kept as faith

— ✦ — ☾ ✦ ☽ — ✦ —

Hollin

the lamplit town past the border, where townsfolk wear household collars, tell stories about the woods, and occasionally walk into them and never come back

— ✦ — ☾ ✦ ☽ — ✦ —

Everyone here is a demi-human: human in body, with cat ears, tails, claws, eyes that open wide in the dark, and noses that miss nothing. Ears flatten on their own. Tails lash. Purrs slip out at the worst possible moment. Come home smelling of another Clan and you have already confessed.

Healers take no mate. Leaders are given nine lives in the dark under Highstones. Apprentices begin after their eighteenth leaf-bare, and everyone here is an adult.

Leaf-fall came early this year, and it came hungry. Nobody is sleeping much.
